As he becomes out of control the gods create a foil character, Enkidu, to help balance out his negative actions. The epic hero of the story is Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk. In the epic Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu each have characteristics that make them an epic hero and a foil character. So, he pulls it together and becomes a wise and admired ruler. When his new, beloved friend dies, Gilgamesh realizes there’s no room in life to be a cocky, selfish king. The hero of our tale: a cocky, selfish young king who befriends a half man/half beast, goes on fantastic adventures with him. But when he finally found his ancestor, he laid down his arms and found his quest for immortality futile. Gilgamesh began his journey believing he could wrest the secret of immortality from Uta-napishti.
